In the sidebar, open **Inventory**, then **Products & Parts**. The page address is `/inventory/items`. The page heading reads **Inventory Items**. The tabs at the top, **All products & parts**, **Sell at counter** and **Low stock**, are three views of the same items.

## Before you start

- Decide whether you count this item. A filter you keep on the shelf is **Tracked**; a service fee or a "misc. materials" line is **Non-tracked**.
- Your role needs permission to create inventory items. Otherwise **Add item** is missing.

## Steps

1. Press **Add item**. A drawer opens.
2. Type a **Name**. Add a **SKU** if you use part numbers; it has to be unique in your organization.
3. Under **Item type**, leave **Quantity** for anything you count by number. Choose **Serialized** for items with a serial number each (see [[add-serial-numbered-stock]]) or **Bookable unit** for equipment that gets booked on the schedule.
4. Under **Tracking mode**, leave **Tracked** to keep a running stock count, or choose **Non-tracked** to skip counting. Serialized and bookable items are always tracked.
5. **Unit of measure** starts at `ea`. Pick or type the unit you buy and sell in instead, such as `box`, `ft` or `hour`.
6. Choose a **Category** to group it, or type a new name and pick the "Create category" option.
7. For tracked items, set a **Reorder point** (the level that means "order more") and a **Reorder target** (the level to bring stock back up to). The target must be at least the point. An item with a reorder point shows on [[check-low-stock-for-register-items|Low stock]] once it drops to that level.
8. Add a **Description** for your own team if it helps.
9. Under **Pricing and tax settings** (already open), set the **Unit price**, the **Tax treatment default** and, if you track margins, the **Default unit cost**. **Show advanced** holds the catalog code, tax overrides and bundle settings. See [[set-offering-pricing-and-tax]]. This section only appears if your role can see prices or costs.
10. Press **Create item**. The drawer closes and Nova shows "Inventory item created."

## What you see

- The list shows **Name**, **SKU**, **Type**, **Tracking**, **Category**, **Status** and **Updated**. Search with **Search inventory items**; **Filters** narrows by type, tracking, status and category.
- Press a row to open it for editing, or use its menu: **Edit** and **Deactivate**. A deactivated item shows **Reactivate** instead.
- **Columns** adds fields such as **Unit**, **Reorder point** and **Reorder target** to the table.
- Each field in the drawer has a small help icon that explains it.

## If something looks different

- The list reads **No inventory items found.**: nothing has been added yet.
- **Tracking mode** and **Unit of measure** are greyed out: the item is **Serialized** or a **Bookable unit**, which are always tracked and always counted as `ea`.
- The drawer says the SKU "is already used by" another item: pick a different SKU or edit the other item.
- **Deactivate** asks you to confirm and offers a box to explain why. Past stock movements and documents keep the item. **Reactivate** happens straight away.
- You need to put stock on the shelf, not just define the item: see [[record-a-stock-movement]].
