In the sidebar, open **Equipment & Fleet**, then **Assets**, press the asset's name, then press the **Contents** tab. The page address is `/assets/` followed by the asset and `/contents`.

A trailer, van or kit can hold other assets, such as a generator on a trailer or a drawbar kit in a van. Each part is its own asset with its own readiness, and a blocked part blocks the asset that holds it.

## Before you start

- Only an asset marked as a container or kit parent can hold other assets. The **Supports contents** tile says **Yes** or **No**.
- Seeing contents needs permission to view asset relationships. Changing them needs permission to create or update them; without it **Manage contents** and the **Remove** buttons are not shown.
- The part you want to install has to exist as an asset first: see [[create-an-operational-asset]].

## Steps

1. Read the tiles: **Container role**, **Contained assets**, **Required rules** (with how many are missing) and **Supports contents**.
2. Read **Contents tree**. **Installed in** names the asset this one sits inside, if any. Under **Current asset**, each part shows its readiness and asset tag; press a part's name to open it.
3. Read **Required contents** for the parts this asset's profile says it must hold.
4. To install a part, choose it in **Install child asset** under **Manage contents**, then press **Install selected asset**. The list leaves out this asset and anything already inside it.
5. To swap a part, choose the part in **Replace current child** and the new one in **Replacement asset**, then press **Replace contained asset**.
6. To move a part into another kit or vehicle, choose it in **Transfer child** and the destination in **Target parent**, then press **Transfer contained asset**. Only assets marked as containers are offered as destinations.
7. To take a part out, press **Remove** beside it in **Contents tree**.
8. Replacing, transferring and removing open a dialog. Give a reason if your organization asks for one, then press **Continue**.

## What you see

- Nova confirms each change by name, for example "Drawbar kit installed into Trailer 12." or "Drawbar kit transferred to Trailer 14."
- The tiles, **Contents tree** and the asset's readiness update. If a required part is now missing, the **Readiness** tab says so.
- Technicians can make the same swaps and transfers from the field screen: see [[record-field-work-on-an-asset]].

## If something looks different

- "Parent asset must support contents before durable assets can be installed" appears: this asset is not marked as a container or kit parent.
- "Contained asset is already installed in another parent asset." appears: the part sits in another kit. Open that kit and use **Transfer child** there instead.
- "Containment cycles are not allowed" appears: you tried to put an asset inside one of its own parts.
- **Manage contents** is missing: your role can see contents but not change them.
- A part you expect is not in the list: the lists show up to 200 assets. Search for the part on the asset list and check it is not already installed elsewhere.
