In the sidebar, open **Settings**, then choose **Discount Audiences** under **Sales & Billing**. **New segment** opens the form at `/settings/org/billing/discounts/audience-segments/create`. **Edit segment** in a row's actions opens that audience at an address ending in `/edit`.

To save a new audience quickly, see [[save-a-discount-audience]]. This article explains what each rule does.

## Before you start

- Your role needs permission to manage discount rules. Without it the form is read-only and the save button is greyed out.
- Every rule you fill in must be true for a customer to be in the audience. Inside one list, such as tiers, any one match is enough. A blank rule is ignored.

## Steps

1. Give the audience a **Name**, a short **Segment key** such as vip, and a **Description**. Set **Status** to **Active**. An **Inactive** audience stays saved, but no discount can use it.
2. Tick the customer types it covers:
   - **First-time customer**: has no quote or invoice yet, not counting drafts.
   - **Returning customer**: has at least one.
   - **Lapsed customer**: a returning customer whose last quote or invoice is at least **Lapsed threshold (days)** old. Blank means 90 days.
   - **Authenticated customer**, **Portal-only** and **Public guest booking only**: the customer is signed in, is using the portal, or is booking online as a guest.
3. In **Customer segments**, type words separated by commas, such as vip, enterprise. A customer matches when one of them is among their account's tags or segments.
4. Type **Customer tiers** (such as gold, platinum) and **Lifecycle segments** (such as new, active, dormant) the same way.
5. Under **Branch targeting**, tick the branches whose customers qualify, by the customer's home branch. Tick none to allow every branch.
6. Under **Catalog entity types**, tick **Offerings** or **Inventory items** to limit the audience to quotes and invoices with at least one line of that kind.
7. Leave **Account ids** and **Catalog refs** blank. They take Nova's internal record numbers, which are not shown anywhere on screen.
8. Press **Create segment**, or **Save segment** when editing. **Reset** puts the form back the way it was.

## What you see

- Nova confirms that the audience was created or updated, and it appears in **Reusable Audience Segments**.
- The **Summary** column sums up the rules. **Usage** shows how many discounts and codes use the audience, or **Unused**.
- Pick the audience when you create a discount. See [[create-a-discount]].

## If something looks different

- **Delete segment** removes an unused audience at once, without asking. Nova refuses to delete one that a discount or code still uses; check **Usage**, and set it to **Inactive** instead if you only want it out of the way.
- **Branch targeting** says no branches are available: your organization has no branches set up, so there is nothing to narrow.
- A customer you expected does not get the discount: check every rule you filled in. One rule that does not match is enough to leave them out.
