In the sidebar, open **Settings**, then choose **Discounts** under **Sales & Billing**. The page address is `/settings/org/billing/discounts`.

## Before you start

- Decide what kind of discount it is. A **Code** discount is one customers or staff type in. An **Automatic** discount applies by itself when its rules match. A **Manual** one is applied by staff when they choose to.
- Your role needs the permission to create discounts. Turning one on needs the activate permission.

## Steps

1. Press **New discount**. A panel opens titled **New canonical discount**.
2. To start quickly, press one of the templates at the top: **10% public code**, **$ off minimum spend**, **Product/service discount** or **Private customer code**. They fill in sensible values you can change.
3. Under **Basics**, type a **Discount name** and pick a **Discount type**. Leave **Status** as **Draft** until you have checked everything.
4. For a code discount, under **Discount Code** type the **Customer code** (for example `SPRING10`) or press **Generate**. Pick a **Code type**: **Public** for anyone, **Private** for a customer you give it to, **Portal** or **Booking** for those places only. Set **Total uses**, **Per customer** and **Per document** limits; use `1` for **Per document** on a normal code.
5. Under **Discount Value**, pick a **Value type**: **Percent off** with a **Discount percent**, **Amount off** with a **Discount amount**, or **Fixed unit price**. Add a **Maximum discount** or **Minimum subtotal** if you want a cap or a spend threshold.
6. Under **Schedule**, set **Starts** and **Ends**, and, if it only runs on certain days or hours, **Eligible weekdays**, **Daily start** and **Daily end**. **Blackout dates** are days it never applies.
7. Under **Applies To**, choose an **Application scope**: **Document / whole order** or **Line item**. Narrow it with **Included services**, **Included products**, **Included customers/accounts** or **Included branches** as needed.
8. Under **Eligibility & Surfaces**, tick where the discount may be used: **Public**, **Booking**, **Portal checkout**, **Recurring**. **Customer & Account Rules** lets you limit it to, for example, a **First-time customer**.
9. Press **Preview** to see how Nova would apply it, then **Create discount**. Nova confirms the discount was created and reopens it for editing, with **Activate** at the top.
10. When you are ready for customers to use it, press **Activate**. See [[activate-deactivate-or-copy-a-discount]].

## What you see

- The list shows each **Definition**, its **Coverage**, its **Status** (**Draft**, **Active**, **Inactive** or **Retired**) and when it was **Updated**. The counters above it show **Definitions**, **Codes**, **Applications** and **Redemptions** for the current filter.
- Press a row to open the discount for editing. A **Review** section beside the form sums up the discount in plain words before you press **Save discount**.
- On a saved discount, the **Discount Codes** section lets you add more codes with **Create code**, and each code has its own **Activate** and **Deactivate**.
- **Audience segments** and **Governance** at the top open the pages for reusable customer groups and organization-wide discount policy.

## If something looks different

- **New discount** is missing: your role cannot create discounts. Ask your admin.
- **Create discount** or **Save discount** is greyed out: the currency does not match the organization's, or your role lacks the permission.
- The discount refuses to activate with a message about the percent: **Discount percent** cannot be over 100.
- **Approval required** under **Advanced Policy** is on: using this discount will send the document for approval first. See [[approve-or-reject-a-pricing-exception]].
