In the sidebar, open **Settings**, then choose **Tags** under **Records & Fields**. The page address is `/settings/org/tags`. The page title reads **Organization Tags**.

Tags are labels you stick on records (a VIP customer, a rush work order, a project on hold) so you can spot and filter them anywhere.

## Before you start

- Your role needs the tags permission to see the list and permission to create tags to add one. If **New tag** is missing, ask your admin.

## Steps

1. Press **New tag**. The **New tag** drawer opens.
2. Type a **Name**. Under **Key**, leave it blank to let Nova build one from the name, pick an existing key from the list to reuse it, or type a new one and press Enter.
3. Optionally choose a **Category**. To create one on the spot, press **New category** under **Category Builder**, fill in **Category name**, an optional **Category key**, **Parent category** and **Category color**, and press **Create category**.
4. Add a **Description**, pick a **Color** and, if you want to control position, a **Sort order**. Leave **Active** on.
5. Under **Applies To**, leave every chip off to allow the tag everywhere, or turn on only the record types it belongs to: **Account**, **Contact**, **Location**, **Note**, **Work Order**, **Project**, **Task**, **Booking**, **File** and so on.
6. Optionally set **View Policy**, **Assign Policy**, **Remove Policy** and **Subscribe Policy**. Each starts on **Inherit** (normal permissions); switch one to **Custom** to name **Allow Roles**, **Deny Roles**, **Allow Users** and **Deny Users**. A deny always wins.
7. Press **Save**. Nova shows **Tag created.**, the tag appears in the list, and the drawer switches to the new tag so you can keep editing it.

## What you see

- The list shows each tag's **Tag**, **Category**, **Applies to**, **Assignments** (how many records carry it), **Subscriptions** and **Updated**.
- **Tag display** at the top of the list sets whether tags on records show all the time or only on rollover: **Show tags always** or **Show tags on rollover**.
- The search box finds tags by name, key or description; the filters narrow by **Applies to**, **Category**, **Status** and **Tag origin** (**Custom only** or **System only**).

## If something looks different

- **New tag** is missing: your role cannot create tags.
- **Save** is disabled: **Name** is empty.
- **Create category** is disabled: type a **Category name** first.
- You want to change, subscribe to or remove a tag that already exists: see [[edit-subscribe-to-or-delete-a-tag]].
