In the sidebar, open **Projects & Tasks**, then **Tasks**. The page address is `/work/tasks`, and a new task opens at `/work/tasks/new`. A task is a to-do for a team member. It can stand alone or hang off a customer, a project or a work order.

## Before you start

- Every task belongs to an account, so the customer (or your own organization's internal account) has to exist first.
- Your admin has to give your role the **Create tasks** permission. Without it, **Add Task** does not appear.

## Steps

1. Press **Add Task** at the top of the Tasks list. The **New Task** page opens.
2. If your organization has task templates, **Start point** offers **Blank task** or **From template**. Leave **Blank task** selected for a one-off.
3. Type the **Title**: what needs to get done. Add a **Description** if the person doing it needs detail. The description is internal; customers never see it.
4. Under **Account**, type the customer's name in **Search accounts** and pick them.
5. To attach the task to something bigger, pick a **Project** or a **Work order**. A **Phase** becomes available once a project or work order with phases is chosen.
6. If your organization has more than one branch, the **Branch** field shows which branch the task belongs to. It follows the work order, the project or your current branch; press **Change** to pick another.
7. Set the **Status**, choose the **Owner** who is responsible, and pick a **Due date**.
8. To make this a subtask, pick its **Parent task**.
9. To put it on the Schedule now, tick **Put this task on the Schedule** and pick **At a time**, **Any time that day** or **Not scheduled yet**. See [[put-a-task-on-the-schedule]]. The day you pick here is where the task sits on the Schedule; it does not set the **Due date**, and moving the task on the Schedule later never changes it.
10. Press **Create task**.

## What you see

- Nova shows **Task created.** and opens the new task's page.
- Back on the Tasks list, the task appears with its status, assignee, due date and what it is linked to. It also shows on the owner's **My Work** page.
- The **Task** number field at the top of the form is optional; Nova assigns the next number if you leave it blank.

## If something looks different

- **Title is required.** or **Select an account.** appears under the form: fill that field in and press **Create task** again.
- You chose **From template**: a template panel appears where you pick the template, decide whether to include its checklists and reminders, and assign its roles. Nova then creates the task with its subtasks.
- **Phase** stays greyed out: it only applies once you have chosen a project or work order that has phases.
- **Owner** is greyed out: your role cannot look up teammates, so the task is created without an owner and can be assigned later.
- You opened the form from an account, project or work order page: those fields are already filled in.
