In the portal's sidebar, open **Billing**, then **Invoices & payments**, and find the invoice. The page address ends in `/invoices`. On the **Overview** page, the button on the **You owe** card also brings you here. The button in an invoice email opens the invoice on a secure page with the same payment section; see [[invoice-email]].

## Before you start

- Online payment is available only when the invoice shows a **Pay** button beside its balance. If it shows a panel headed "How to pay this invoice" instead, use one of the methods listed there.
- A payment here applies to this one invoice. It does not settle other open invoices on your account.

## Steps

1. Select **Pay** beside the balance. The page jumps to the payment section, which is headed with the company's name.
2. Under **Payment amount**, leave the field blank to pay the full balance, or type a smaller amount for a partial payment. A deposit request that must be paid in full shows **Required payment amount** instead.
3. If the company accepts tips, choose one under **Add a tip**: **No tip**, a preset, or an amount you type in **Custom tip**. The tip is charged on top of the payment and does not change the invoice balance.
4. Check **Charge summary**: the **Invoice payment** (**Deposit payment** for a deposit request), any **Tip**, and **Total charge today**.
5. Select the **Pay** button that shows the total. The secure payment form opens further down the invoice, below its lines; scroll down to it.
6. Enter your card, or choose Apple Pay or Google Pay when your device offers them. Select **Pay now**. Select **Cancel** to back out without paying.

## What you see

- **Payment received**: the payment went through. The invoice balance and status update, and you get a receipt by email when the company sends them.
- **Payment is processing**: the payment was sent and is waiting for the card network. Check the invoice again in a moment.
- **More verification is needed**: your bank wants one more step. Finish it in the form.
- **Payment could not be completed**: the card was refused. Try again or use another card.
- The payment then appears under **Payment history** on the invoice and under **Recent payment history** at the top of the page.

## If something looks different

- A message appears under **Payment amount** or **Custom tip**: the amount is more than the balance, zero or not a valid number. Fix the field and try again.
- **Unable to start payment**: the company's card payments could not be started right now. Try again in a moment, or use another way to pay.
- The **Pay** button reads **Preparing…** for a long time: refresh the page and try once more.
- The form could not load: select **Refresh payment form** to start again.
- You want to pay several invoices at once: pay each one separately. Every payment applies only to the invoice you started from.
- The company sent you a payment link by email or text instead: it opens a secure checkout page for the amount the company set. After you pay, you land on **Payment submitted**, which says **You’re all set** while the payment finishes going through; you can close the page. Do not pay again unless the company tells you it did not go through. See [[payment-receipt-message]].
