In the sidebar, open **Settings**, then choose **Service Asset Types** under **Accounts**. The page address is `/settings/org/service-assets/taxonomy`. It is the **Taxonomy** tab of the service asset settings; **Profiles**, **States** and **Defaults** are the other tabs.

A service asset is a piece of equipment at a customer's location. Its type (say, Furnace) and subtype (say, Gas furnace) decide what Nova asks about it and how it is filtered. This page is where you build that list.

## Before you start

- Your role needs permission to manage service asset settings. Otherwise the page says you do not have permission.
- Start with types. A subtype must live under a type.

## Steps

1. Under **Asset types**, type the name in the **Create new asset type** box. Optionally add a **Type description** and **Aliases, comma separated** (other names people search by).
2. Pick the profile in the list below the aliases. The profile decides which details the asset editor asks for.
3. Press **Create asset type**. The type appears in the list below, showing its profile, subtype count and how many assets use it.
4. Click a type to select it (the first one is selected when the page opens). In **Type details** you can rename it, edit its description and aliases, change its profile, untick **Active** to hide it, or tick **Default type**. Press **Save type**.
5. Use **Up** and **Down** beside **Asset types** to reorder the selected type.
6. Under **Asset subtypes**, with a type selected, type the subtype name, an optional **Subtype description** and aliases, then press **Create subtype**. Select a subtype to open **Subtype details**, where you can rename it, move it under another type with the list, or untick **Active** to hide it. Press **Save subtype**.
7. Scroll to **Identifier types** to add the kinds of identifiers your assets carry, such as a warranty code. Type a **Label**, optional **Description** and **Aliases**, choose which profiles it applies to (or **Available for every profile**), then press **Add identifier type**.

## What you see

- The summary cards at the top count your types and subtypes, and **Selected branch** names the type you are working in.
- Each identifier type row shows whether it is inactive and how many profiles it applies to. Select one to edit it, use the up and down arrow buttons to reorder, switch **Available in identifier pickers** off to hide it, and press **Save identifier type**.
- Changes take effect immediately in the service asset editor.

## If something looks different

- **Create subtype** is disabled and the box reads "Choose a type first": no asset types exist yet. Create one first.
- The page says this area is not enabled for your organization's plan: service assets are not turned on. Ask your admin.
- You want to change which profile a type uses without opening it here: see [[choose-a-profile-for-each-service-asset-type]].
