Bookkeeping
Transactions, expenses, reconciliation and reports.
- Add a bank connection
Record which bank or card feed fills which account in your books, and disconnect one you stop using. A connection does not bring in bank lines by itself.
- Add a bank transaction by hand
Record one bank or credit-card line yourself when you do not have a statement file, and void a line that should never have been there.
- Add an account to your chart of accounts
Add, rename or deactivate the income, expense, asset, liability and equity accounts your books post to, and read any account's register.
- Categorize bank transactions
Tell Nova what each bank line was for: pick a category and sales tax, mark it personal or a transfer, match it to an invoice, or split it, one at a time or in bulk.
- Close the books for a period
Lock a date range so nothing new can be posted into it, close the fiscal year to roll net income into retained earnings, and reopen a period if you must.
- Create a budget and compare it to actuals
Set a target for each income and expense account over a period, then open the budget to see actual spending, the variance and the percent used.
- Enter opening balances
Record what each bank, asset, liability and equity account was worth on the day you started keeping books in Nova.
- Export your books for your accountant
Download your general ledger as a CSV, a QuickBooks IIF file or a portable data file, or an accountant package of four report spreadsheets, for a date range.
- File and remit sales tax
Read how much sales tax you owe for a period, then record the remittance from the bank account you paid it from so the tax accounts clear.
- Import a bank statement
Bring your bank or credit-card activity into Nova by uploading an OFX or QFX file, or by uploading or pasting a CSV and matching its columns.
- Post a manual journal entry
Record an adjustment directly in the ledger with balanced debit and credit lines, and reverse a posted entry with a mirror-image entry when it was wrong.
- Reconcile a bank account
Match your books to a bank statement by entering the statement's ending balance and ticking each line that appears on it until the difference is zero.
- Record an expense
Enter a bill or purchase from a vendor with its total, tax and category so it shows in your books, and void one that was entered by mistake.
- Run a financial report
See your profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, sales tax, aging, cash flow, vendor payments and a health check for any date range.
- Set up a recurring journal entry
Schedule a balanced journal entry, such as monthly rent or depreciation, to post itself on a cadence, then pause, resume or run it early.
- Set up auto-categorize rules
Teach Nova that any bank line whose description contains a word, such as a supplier's name, always goes to one category, so imports come in already sorted.
- Set up bookkeeping
Turn on bookkeeping for your organization with one button, then read the year-to-date numbers on the Bookkeeping overview.
- Set up email-in receipts
Name the mailbox your team forwards receipts to, so Nova can pull forwarded receipts in as receipts waiting to be reviewed.
- Upload a receipt and turn it into an expense
Drop in a photo or PDF of a receipt, let Nova read the vendor, date, total and tax, then check the numbers and confirm it as an expense.
