See a refund on your invoice
Find a refund on your invoice in the portal, read the refund notice the company emailed you, know how long the money takes to reach your card, and who to ask if something is wrong.
In the portal's sidebar, open Billing, then Invoices & payments, and find the invoice. The page address ends in /invoices. If the company emailed you a refund notice, the link in it opens the same invoice on a secure page.
A refund goes back to the card you paid with. The company sends it from their side; the portal shows you what was sent and when.
Steps
- Open the invoice. The status card near the top shows where the invoice stands after the refund: Refunded when everything you paid came back, Paid when the company closed the invoice after a partial refund, or Partially paid when part of it is owing again. Under that, it says how much was refunded to you, for example "$45.00 was refunded to you. Refunds are listed with the payments below."
- Read the totals under the lines. Refunded amount shows how much has gone back to you across all payments on this invoice.
- Scroll to Payment history. The refunded payment lists the amount, how you paid, and a line saying a Refund receipt was sent, by which channel and when.
- If you left a tip and it was returned too, the payment shows Tip refunded with the amount.
What you see
- The refund notice email is headed "Refund Receipt" with the company's name and the payment number. It says the company issued a refund for your payment, the refunded amount and the date, and it is marked REFUNDED. Keep it; it is your record. See Keep a payment or refund receipt.
- A text, if the company texts you instead, says your refund has been processed and carries a secure link to the invoice.
- The money normally shows on your card statement within 5 to 10 business days, depending on your bank. The company cannot speed that up once it is sent.
- A full refund of a paid invoice turns the status chip to Refunded and the big amount to No amount due. After a partial refund the company chooses what happens to the invoice: it can stay Paid with the refunded part shown separately, or read Partially paid with a Balance due again.
If something looks different
- The invoice shows a Balance due after the refund: the company kept the invoice open, usually because work is still to be done or paid for another way. Ask them if you did not expect that.
- No refund notice came: not every company sends one automatically. The refund still shows under Payment history once it is made.
- It has been more than 10 business days and nothing has reached your card: contact the company and quote the invoice number and the payment number from the receipt. Their phone number and email are at the top of the invoice. The company sent the refund through the card processor and can check its progress.
- You paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer: a refund of that kind is arranged with the company directly and will not appear as a card refund here.
