Show which tasks a task waits on
Record that a task depends on another task, or holds one up, from its Dependencies tab, so everyone sees what has to happen first.
In the sidebar, open Projects & Tasks, then Tasks, open the task, and press the Dependencies tab. The page address is /work/tasks/ followed by the task and /dependencies.
A dependency is not a subtask. It links two separate tasks: "the drywall waits on the electrical rough-in". Use subtasks to split one task into steps (Break a task into subtasks).
Before you start
- Adding and removing dependencies needs permission to change task dependencies.
- The Dependencies tab only shows when your plan includes task dependencies.
Steps
- In the direction field, pick Depends on task (this task waits on the other one) or Blocks task (the other task waits on this one).
- In Search task, type the other task's name or number and pick it. If it does not exist yet and your role can create tasks, you can create it from the same list.
- Press Add dependency.
To remove one, press Remove beside it.
What you see
- Blocked By lists the tasks this one waits on; Blocking lists the tasks waiting on this one. Press a task's name to open it.
- On the Details tab, the Collaboration snapshot counts Blocked by and Blocking.
- The other task shows the same link from its side.
If something looks different
- Nova refuses with "Dependency would create a cycle": the other task already waits on this one, directly or through other tasks. Two tasks cannot wait on each other.
- Add dependency is greyed out: pick a task first.
- The direction and search fields are missing: your role cannot change dependencies. You can still read them.
- Adding the same link twice does nothing; it is already there.
